Scope of Practice:

It is common that a consultant will perform more procedures in their NHS practice than privately due to the differences in the private and NHS facilities. The table below shows the main procedures Mr Cole performs at Claremont Private Hospital and is a guide to his scope of practice.

Surgery for sciatica (microdiscectomy or decompression)
Surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis (lumbar decompression)
Surgery for upper limb nerve pain or spinal cord compression (anterior cervical discectomy & fusion)
Surgery for upper limb nerve pain or spinal cord compression (cervical laminectomy or cervical foraminotomy)
Instrumented fusion cervical, thoracic & lumbar spine
Coccyx pain (injections & coccyx excision)
Spinal deformity surgery – paediatric & adult
Spinal bracing for scoliosis
Emergency spinal surgery for trauma, tumour & infection rarely

Training & background:


Mr Cole is part of Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd (SOL), proudly in partnership with Claremont Private Hospital. In addition to Claremont's CQC accreditation, SOL has it's own CQC accreditation and is part of Claremont's 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-call consultant cover provision for inpatients. SOL Consultants are integral to the reduced length of stay Claremont patients enjoy, compared to other providers.  

Mr Ashley Cole is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northern General Hospital, with a private practice at Claremont.

His surgical training was carried out in Sheffield and he also completed Fellowships in spinal surgery in Nottingham, Brisbane and America.

Mr Cole sees adult patients privately with spinal problems and also works full-time in the NHS at both Sheffield Children's Hospital and the Northern General Hospital.

He has an interest in outcome evaluation and research and has completed two theses on spinal deformity (idiopathic, scoliosis), the first of these as a medical student. Mr Cole was a co-developer of the British Spine Registry - used nationally to collect data after spinal surgery.

He is an active member of the British Scoliosis Society, British Association of Spinal Surgeons, British Orthopaedic Association and the British Association of Clinical Anatomists (Member of Council). He also works for NHS England as Chair of the Spinal Services CRG and Clinical Lead for the Regional Spinal Networks Project.
