Why do diets fail?
Diets are usually designed to ensure your calorie intake is reduced and people gain weight for a number of reasons. Reduced calorie intake for a short while does not address the underlying problem, so people who diet also regain more weight than they have lost. This is because during the period of dieting they have reduced their basal metabolic rate and their metabolism has slowed down, however, when they start to eat normally they do not burn off all the calories they have consumed and gain weight.

It is very important to therefore to understand the underlying reason for weight gain and address the issues whilst reducing calorie intake.

Why do I find it difficult to lose weight, even though I am sticking to the diet?
There are several reasons why you may struggle to lose weight. This may be due to abnormal hunger pattern, emotional eating, hormonal disturbance, altered metabolism, medication, genetics or any other medical conditions.

What happens during a weight loss advice initial consultation?
During your initial consultation a detailed assessment is undertaken including your childhood history so the cause for weight gain and/or weight regain can be established. This includes assessing any hormonal problems.  Your hunger pattern and metabolism are also assessed and you will be physically examined to determine if you have any weight related medical conditions.

How does the medication weight loss programme work?
You will first have a detailed consultation with Dr Raj to ascertain the cause for weight gain. You will also be examined to ensure the licensed medications (Saxenda or Mysimba) are safe and appropriate for you. Following the initial consultation, you may be asked to have blood/urine tests to rule out any hormonal problems.
If you are found to be suitable, a 3 month Saxenda or Mysimba weight management programme will be commenced.
As a part of this programme you will be continuously monitored and after the 3 months, you will also have an option of joining the maintenance programme. For more information on Saxenda and Mysimba, please see our facebook page an also visit The Yorkshire Obesity Clinic website. For people who are not suitable for any of the above medications, an intensive medical weight management programme is offered.

How much weight will I lose?
The weight loss that you can expect is variable from person to person. It depends on your starting weight, underlying medical problems, previous dieting and your engagement with the programme.
Generally speaking, most people can expect to lose from 1 to 4lbs a week. However some may lose more weight and people are known to lose up to 6 stones in 9 months.

Will the weight loss be permanent or am I likely to regain the weight later?
As mentioned above weight loss can be permanent only if the underlying issues are addressed and managed appropriately. For example if there is a hormonal problem or emotional eating, just going on a diet will only result in a short term weight loss followed by weight regain.

What is medical weight loss programme for post-surgery weight regain?
Weight loss surgery is very effective however some people are likely to regain weight after weight loss surgery. There are several reasons, why weight regain occurs. In this programme, you will be assessed for the reasons for weight gain, investigated and appropriate management offered to ensure you continue to lose weight. It is extremely important you remain engaged with the programme to ensure long-term success.
